Quote of the Week #2

This quote of the week is not dependent on a Spanglish blunder, but rather a cultural thing....or at least I hope.

After class everyday my students slowly trickle out and most of them tell me thank you and have a nice day. It's really nice saying goodbye to each of them and wishing them a good day in return.

Wednesday came along and in one of my classes there were only 5 students (due to some testing). We took notes for while and then I gave them the latter part of the class to have to themselves (yes, I know, I just got pegged as the worst teacher ever. lol). Anyways, so as my kids were leaving, one of my boys (Alejandro) looks straight at me and says, "Mease, I love you." and continues out the door.

What can I even respond to that? They don't teach you these things in teacher training. Luckily he was out the door before I could make anything out. I'm thinking he told me that because I gave them free time?

It get's worse though. At least on my part. Today, as Alejandro was leaving he again told me, "Mease, I love you."  I was caught up in pulling everything together after a rambunctious class and without thinking naturally responded back, "I love you too."  Ah!!! I was grasping at my words as they floated away. It's kinda like those moments back in grade school when you'd call your teacher "mom" accidentally.  Woops. There it went and out the door he was.

I'll have to ask around and see if it's okay here for students to tell you they love you. Oh goodness, what have I got myself into.

Mease. I love you.
